While laser light increased cell metabolism in cultured cells, the in vivo outcome was reduced tumor progression. This striking, unexpected result, was paralleled by the recruitment of immune cells, in particular T lymphocytes and dendritic cells, which secreted type I interferons. Laser light also reduced the number of highly angiogenic macrophages within the tumor mass and promoted vessel normalization, an emerging strategy to control tumor progression. Collectively, these results set photobiomodulation as a safety procedure in oncological patients and open the way to its innovative use for cancer therapy.

Perineal tears as a result of childbirth trauma are common with spontaneous vaginal birth. Research has shown that as many as 85% of all women will experience some kind of perineal tearing during childbirth. From a 2019 study: given that the blue light-emitting diode (LED) is an electromagnetic radiation source with antimicrobial properties, the vulva and vagina were exposed to blue LED irradiation in a single session, divided into two applications. A reassessment was performed 21 days after the treatment. The light-emitting device had a visible spectrum, in the violet and blue ranges, and a maximum temperature increase of 7 °C. During the reassessment, the culture was found to be negative for fungus, and the signs and symptoms of the patient had disappeared.

The use of PBM in treating postmenopausal women suffering from symptoms of VVA showed improvement in both objective and subjective symptoms. The subjective improvements correlated to the related histological changes, showing an improvement in vaginal atrophy.

Specifically, the histological samples three months post-treatment showed angiogenesis, increased vascularization in the lamina propria, neocollagenesis, increased thickness of the epithelium, and an increase the cellularity in the ECM, with no thermal damage effects.

Finally, it is interesting to emphasize that the histological changes were maintained at 12 weeks, which suggests that if these patients continued the treatments at home, they could further improve or maintain the clinical benefits beyond the initial treatment protocol.
